Mid engined boxer? That will be fun to do the head gaskets on.

Strange picture for them to use for that article. That’s a
rendering of the old S-FR concept with an updated fascia nothing to do with an MR2. I’d just be happy if they came out with the S-FR.

It’s the obvious thing, and has been for some time: pair a boxer engine with a base-model Impreza transmission and plop it in the middle. Low center of gravity, cheap parts that already exist, packaging not important. No power steering needed, and they could likely adapt their pre-existing suspension geometry to do the job.
Of course, positioning that within the market would be a challenge. To fit between Supra and FR-S we’re looking at a $40K Toyota, and I don’t see that working out. They’d be better off building an FR-S turbo sedan at the same price point , people would buy that.

They could just recycle old electric steering parts

The roadster used an electro hydraulic system. More likely to use a pure electric system though. Provided the car is light enough it doesn’t really need it, but people expect to have it.

Definitely could be the base of the rendering, but I’m sure that it’s intended as an updated S-FR.
